Completion Date: May 2009

Project Description:
Major refurbishment and new additions to the public conveniences in the centre of Winchester
Works:
At the end of 2005 we were approached by Winchester City Council, Environmental Department with a view to improving the toilet facilities at Abbey Gardens, which had become outdated and unsuitable for disabled users. In contrast to the previous accommodation the new toilets were designed to be light, airy and pleasant to use. This was particularly important due to their proximity next to the main coach stand and therefore the first experience of the city for many visitors. The external alterations and additions were informed by the existing, listed Abbey House buildings, with a new hipped clay tile roof, and six panel doors set beneath tile-arched heads with leaded canopies. The latter indicate the toilet entrances and provide weather protection. Internally the layout was extended and re-organised to provide improved access and enlarged disabled facilities, the roof space was also opened up, rising to ventilating gable windows at each end of the ridge. All finishes and equipment were designed to be robust, bright and where possible hands free.
