Location: Whippingham, Isle of Wight
Completion Date: 2007 - Ongoing
Contract Value: Undisclosed
Project Description:
Conservation and repair of the church roof, crossing tower, spires and masonry, over three phases.
Works:
Following the offer of substantial grant funding by English Heritage, made through the Repair Grants for Places of Worship Scheme, Radley House Partnership were appointment to take the proposed programme of high level essential repairs forward. Church funds had only enabled small scale repairs and maintenance tasks over the preceding 25 years to be carried out. The scale of the church, coupled with the lack of access to the high level parts, had led to an urgent need for extensive refurbishment to arrest water ingress which risked substantial damage to the historic fabric. Phase I of the project predominantly involved necessary repairs to the upper part of the crossing tower, spire and finials. Phase II, comprising the repair of the west bell tower, lower tower and east end roofs started on-site in January 2010; a further final phase will see works completed to the nave, transepts and vestry roofs. The project is due for completion in December 2011.
