Location: Isle of Wight
Completion Date: May 2001
Contract Value: £48,000
Project Description:
Conservation of external stonework to the Scheduled Ancient Monument
Works:
The project compromised the conservation of the external stonework of the Gatehouse which, as a consequence of the soft local stone used in the original construction, was spalling and raising concern with respect to the safety of visitors below. Indeed, a temporary netted scaffold had been erected to catch fragments of falling masonry. Following initial consolidation trials, which were conducted to determine the most appropriate method of conservation, the repairs were scheduled over a period of three days on a stone-by-stone basis. Each repair was then reviewed by the project architect with the conservators before work commenced.
