The practice has developed a reputation for sensitive design solutions work to listed domestic buildings Porch Cottage is a listed two-storey thatched property in the village of Bramdean which over the last 30 years has undergone substantial alterations to its original form. The cottage, ‘L’ shaped in plan arranged on two levels with an open central staircase tying all the levels together. Proposals included a detached double garage, located to allow the thatched porch entrance to the south elevation of the cottage to be re-used as originally intended; as the main entrance. It was the intention for the garage to appear as an outbuilding within the landscape of the property, tying in with the local vernacular. The client’s brief was to maximise the use of the existing cottage, although not at the expense of the original building. The proposals were in proportion with, and intended to appear subservient to the existing property and contribute to the overall appearance of the cottage.
