Hop Pickers Hut, Binsted
Radley House Partnership were invited as specialist consultants to carry out an historic building appraisal of an interesting former Hop Pickers’ Hut in Binsted, the purpose of which was to advise upon its heritage value and importance in both the local and national context. The findings of this research and analysis are to be used in support of a planning application to sympathetically convert and upgrade the structure for residential use, so ensuring its long-term future.
These simple timber-framed and corrugated iron clad structures were built across the many hop farms of the south of England in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, providing an improved quality of living for the seasonal workers and their families who would travel from the south coast and London to ‘holiday’ and help with the harvest – many of whom would return to the same farm and hut year after year. Originally built as temporary structures, they fell into decline in the 1960’s along with the introduction of mechanised picking. No longer serving any useful purpose, the majority fell into disrepair and were demolished, now making the Binsted example a rare survivor – especially in its local context of East Hampshire, as the majority of the remaining pickers’ huts are located in and around the Kent hop fields.

Kennets Beech, Beauworth
Kennets Beech was extended and altered to provide additional accommodation together with a new timber framed garage block, small stable building and alterations to the drive. It is a sensitive site within the South Downs National Park and the authority was concerned about distant views of the house stating that it should retain its form and mass so that it was not lost within the new works. Consequently, the extension was designed as a separate subservient building with a glazed link to the existing house. Our clients were very keen to incorporated green energy in the form of a ground source heat pump to provide underfloor heating throughout and photovoltaic panels to provide electricity.
